Golf Courses on Arran.
Lochranza Golf Club, at the north end of Arran, is a splendid 18 hole parkland course. It is demanding and challenging. Making the most of the natural features of the surrounding countryside, it’s renowned for its beauty and known to be a real challenge – even to low handicappers.
Brodick Golf Club is the first course you’ll see when you disembark from the ferry as it’s just a mile up the road. The entire course is at sea level and it’s a mix of parkland and links terrain, adjoining the beach. It’s one of the older courses on the island, established in 1897, and is relatively short at 4736 yards and a par of 65. With nine par 3s on the card, it’s a course that favours good shot makers so if you’re at your best with your 9 iron and your putter, this is the course for you. Open 5th and 6th June 2010 see events calendar for more info.
Whiting Bay Golf Club’s 18-hole, par 63 course is one of the most popular on Arran. It’s an undulating parkland course and whilst relatively short at just 4063 yards it’s challenging par 3’s make it a fair test of golf for players of all handicaps. The course has outstanding panoramic sea views across to Holy Isle, Turnberry and the Ayrshire coast. There’s always a warm welcome in the Clubhouse.
If you’ve only got time for nine holes, why not try Machrie Bay? This immaculately kept parkland course is 12 miles from Brodick with some really interesting holes. Designed by Willie Fernie at the turn of the 20th Century when he was the professional at Troon, it’s full of quirky little challenges that will ensure an interesting game.
Arguably the most challenging course on the island, Lamlash Golf Club has very tight greens and some hazardous burns running through the course. Indeed it is the hazards rather than the length of the course (just 4640 yards for its 18 holes) that present the challenge at Lamlash and it can be a real test to any golfer. It also has a smart clubhouse that was completed in 1998. Ladies Open 22nd July 2010 - Lamlash Open 7th and 8th August 2010 see events calendar for more detail.
Established in 1892, Corrie Golf Club is another with a great history. It’s also spectacularly beautiful with stunning views across the Firth of Clyde and on to Argyll. The 9-hole course is relatively short at 3896yards but it can be challenging and any wayward drives will be severely punished. Lookout for the sign at the fourth green warning golfers of the dangers of snakes!
Set amongst some dramatic scenery near Blackwaterfoot, Shiskine is a 12-hole course that has been ranked amongst the top 100 in the UK for the past few years. It’s a superb links course on Arran’s west coast with a proud history dating back to 1896. Again, 1893 Open Champion, Willie Fernie’s design has stood the test of time and every hole is a challenge. Because it presents a unique sporting challenge, the course enjoys almost cult status amongst golfers from all over the world.
Arran is also well served for other golfing facilities including a driving range at Balmichael near Blackwaterfoot and two well stocked pro shops. Brodick and Shiskine Pro Shops stock a wide range of golfing goods and tuition is also available.
