Getting Around Arran

Getting around is a piece of cake – the A841 road follows the coast around in a circle.

Set off from Lochranza with its ruined castle in the north and you can make your way south past Goatfell (the highest peak on Arran) to Brodick, the main port. Continue south and you’ll drive past spiritual Holy Island before cutting across the south end of the island. At Blackwaterfoot, you have the choice of following the coast road back to where you set off, or returning to Brodick by the ‘string road’ – so called because it looks like a piece of string winding across the terrain.

Arran is a mere 56 miles in circumference.  Travel distances are short and in most instances, a drive of 30 minutes or less is all that’s required to reach your destination for the day’s activities.

With so much in the way of spectacular scenery and interesting sights, you’ll probably want to take your time exploring Arran – even by car, you’ll need at least a couple of days. And don’t forget to pick up a map before you set off!
