Family Activities

Stay on target

Arran’s amazing environment will re-energise you, and if you’re sporty-minded you might fancy participating in some of the sporting activities available.

You might try your hand joining the local football training on one of the village playing fields, or by joining the hockey club training at Ormidale Park, or throwing the hammer at the Highland Games! But for some people, we recognise that the best thing about sports on Arran is standing (or sitting) on the side-lines and cheering participants on whilst relaxing with a picnic of Arran produce, and letting others break the sweat!

Running events are popular. The Goatfell Hill Race has been well established now for decades and takes place in May, with runners leaving Brodick on the road, before heading up our highest hill and back down again. Shiskine Valley hosts a half marathon at the end of June, covering a figure of 9 around the valley and there’s several locally organised trail runs. In recent years, a couple of Ultra Marathons take place annually, taking experienced national and international trail runners up into the Arran hills.

Most of the island’s golf clubs host Open Days, which are a great opportunity to really ‘feel’ the courses. These competitions are run by the clubs and there’s usually both Ladies and Gents days, with the ubiquitous raffles and sponsored hole prizes!
