Fishing

Angling in Arran

As well as our amazing sea, Arran has a variety of inland and river fishing too, offering brown, rainbow, golden, tiger trout and even carp. All the rivers can hold sea trout and salmon and offer truly wild brown trout.

Some of these are managed by Arran Angling Association, which has fishing rights on two still waters (Loch Garbad and Ivy Cottage) and 9 rivers (Chalmadale, the Sannox and North Sannox, the Cloy, the Benlister, the Monamore, the Ashdale, the Kilmory and the Sliddery). Visitors can take out day permits or associate Membership. (Associate membership can be cheaper if fishing more than one day and offers concessionary boat hire rates.) There is no Sunday fishing except Loch Garbad. Permits or membership must be purchased in advance, and this can be done on their website. Seasons are: Brown Trout 15th March-6th October; Salmon and Sea trout 3rd May-31st October; Rainbow trout (Loch Garbad) - all year round.

Dougarie Estate also offers fishing on the Iorsa, a spate river running through the heart of the Dougarie Estate. The Iorsa, offering both salmon and sea trout fishing, consists of two beats. The Upper Beat runs from and includes Loch Iorsa, where a first class wooden boat is available, to the top end of the Gorge Pool. The Lower Beat starts there and takes in the rest of the river down to and including the Sea Pool. A road running parallel to the river provides easy access to every pool and fishing is by fly only! Fishing is available by the day or week, with two rods on each beat from the middle of June until the end of October.
