Creative Arran

Naturally inspired

For many years Arran’s stunning natural beauty has inspired both visual and performing artists to visit, live and create amazing pieces that reflect the island, its environment and people. Artists are passionate people and Arran Art Trail is a great way to meet gifted artisans who will welcome you into their creative environments or encourage you to visit galleries with muted landscapes and colourful portraits, reflecting island life. Art isn’t all about paintings though…

There is a growing textile creative industry on Arran with knitting, that uses natural dyes from Arran’s rich landscape (also used in felting), and local wool from both sheep and alpacas, which is spun and kitted into luxurious garments to wrap yourself in a little piece of Arran. Beautiful hand crafted jewellery, pottery, porcelain and sculptures are crafted with love and care, and sustainable wood from locally grown trees is often used in stunning bowls, lamps and furniture.

The McLellan Arts Festival is held in September and celebrates the life of Scots playwright Robert McLellan who wrote in Scots and lived at High Corrie. This is a mixture of engaging music, poetry and dramatic performance. Drama is popular on Arran with an annual drama festival offering performances from young and adult thespians, and visiting productions are always welcomed. Music events on Arran are plentiful – Music Arran invite professional musicians to perform, and there’s also a Folk Festival, Rock n Blues Festival and Arran Music Festival – so something for everyone!
